UAE Launches Air Corridor Mapping for Flying Taxis and Cargo Drones
The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has officially begun mapping air routes and developing a regulatory framework for piloted and autonomous flying taxis and cargo drones, marking a significant step towards transforming transportation. The project, which was launched on February 13, marks a significant step towards the UAE’s goals for Advanced Air Mobility (AAM).
The General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) is leading the initiative in collaboration with the Advanced Technology Research Council (ATRC), which includes its two main branches, ASPIRE and the Technology Innovation Institute (TII). The aim is to integrate cutting-edge air mobility solutions into the country’s transport infrastructure, in order to promote the UAE’s grand vision for a smart, sustainable future.
Saif Mohammed Al Suwaidi, Director General of the GCAA, said that mapping dedicated air routes for piloted and autonomous aerial vehicles is a “major milestone” that will ensure the safe and efficient rollout of new air mobility technologies. “This initiative will help deliver transformative solutions for urban transport and pave the way for a more connected and intelligent future,” he said.
The corridor mapping and regulatory setup are expected to be completed within 20 months. Once operational, the dedicated air corridors will link major airports with strategic urban hubs, allowing seamless movement of flying taxis and cargo drones across the country. The project aims to not only reduce ground traffic, but also improve urban connectivity and promote sustainable development.
In the first quarter of 2026, Dubai, a global leader in futuristic innovation, will become the first city in the world to launch an air taxi service. The UAE’s position as a leader in implementing next-generation transport technologies is further supported by the city’s shift towards urban aviation.
With this strategic foundation, which is considered essential for creating a safe, well-organized and scalable air traffic network, the UAE will be at the forefront of global aviation innovation.
