UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure Partners with Emirates Transport to Promote Green Mobility

The UAE’s Ministry of Energy and Infrastructure (MOEI), represented by UAEV, has announced a collaboration with Emirates Transport to install and operate EV charging stations at Emirates Transport buildings. This initiative aims to support the country’s transition to green mobility and aligns with the goal of increasing the share of electric vehicles (EVs) to 50 percent of total vehicles on UAE roads by 2050.

Commitment to Green Transportation

Sharif Al Olama, Under-Secretary for Energy and Petroleum Affairs at MoEl and Chairman of UAEV, emphasized UAEV’s commitment to promoting sustainable transportation. He highlighted the expansion of national EV charging infrastructure as crucial to achieving this goal. Al Olama stated, “Through this collaboration, we will explore ways to enhance sustainability in the public transport sector, including the potential use of hydrogen vehicles and other sustainable transportation modes. This effort supports the UAE’s target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”

Policy Development and Market Growth

In addition to infrastructure development, MOEI and Emirates Transport will collaborate on formulating policies to accelerate EV adoption across the UAE’s private sector. Al Olama noted the steady growth of the EV market, citing that as of 2023, EVs accounted for 3 percent of total vehicles. The UAE also ranked second in the Middle East for EV sales, with electric vehicles comprising 13 percent of total car sales in 2023 according to the International Energy Agency.

Future Plans and Expansion

Looking ahead, UAEV plans to install 100 EV chargers in 2024 and aims for a total of 1,000 EV chargers across the UAE by 2030. This initiative seeks to facilitate convenient access to charging infrastructure and encourage more widespread adoption of EVs throughout the country.

Environmental Impact and Sustainability

Alex Rentier, CEO of Emirates Transport, highlighted the environmental benefits of integrating EV charging stations into the transport network. He emphasized that these efforts contribute to reducing carbon footprint and promoting environmentally friendly transportation options across the UAE.

This collaboration between MOEI and Emirates Transport underscores their shared commitment to advancing sustainable mobility solutions and supporting the UAE’s ambitious environmental goals for the future.
