UAE Initiates Year-Long Study, Surveying 19,000 Families on Cost of Living

A new UAE study will analyse the spending habits of households

The UAE is embarking on a year-long Household and Income Expenditure Survey involving nearly 19,000 families. Announced by the Ministry of Community Development in collaboration with the Federal Competitiveness and Statistics Centre and local statistics centers, this comprehensive survey aims to analyze household spending patterns and income disparities. It intends to identify factors influencing family finances, including education, employment, and socio-economic elements, aligning with the National Strategy for Quality of Life 2031 to elevate living standards.

Abu Dhabi will witness the participation of 11,000 households from 260 areas in the emirate starting January, with survey completion scheduled by December 2024 and results expected by June 2025. The survey, encompassing citizens and residents, seeks to establish a robust family database to inform decisions fostering enhanced living standards.

Aiming for representation, the survey will encompass 70% Emirati and 30% expatriate families, managed by a team of 252 trained field researchers. Participants will receive two forms—one focusing on family characteristics and income levels, the other on expenditure and consumption patterns. It will assess essential spending, household size, income types, and financial conditions among Emiratis and non-Emiratis.

The study’s outcomes aim to illuminate financial challenges faced by families, informing poverty alleviation efforts. Rigorous statistical methodologies and privacy protection ensure accurate representation and data confidentiality for participants.

Globally, a surge in living costs, driven by high inflation and escalating expenses for essentials like housing and energy, has amplified the cost of living. This survey’s relevance lies in understanding local dynamics amidst these global shifts, especially in housing, utilities, and education, which affect household budgets and financial stability.
