Abu Dhabi Police clarified on Monday, January 29, that the ‘minimum speed’ requirement of 120 km/h, which was implemented on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road in April 2023, is applicable to traffic in both directions.
This regulation specifically targets motorists using the two fast lanes, which are the first and second lanes from the left, while the maximum speed permitted on the highway is 140 km/h. Violators of the ‘minimum speed’ rule, driving below 120 km/h, will face a fine of Dh400.
However, it’s important to note that the ‘minimum speed’ regulation does not extend to the third and last lanes. Motorists driving at a slower pace are allowed to use the third lane without any restrictions. Furthermore, heavy vehicles, which are expected to utilize the last lane, are exempt from the minimum speed requirement.
The primary objective behind the activation of the minimum speed regulation is to enhance driver safety. It mandates that slow-moving vehicles occupy the right lanes and yield to vehicles with priority approaching from behind or from the left. This measure is designed to promote a safer and more efficient traffic flow on the road.
In addition to enforcing the minimum speed limit, the police emphasized the importance of cautious driving practices. They reminded drivers to refrain from changing lanes unless the road is clear and there is sufficient distance between their vehicle and others. Motorists are advised to use indicators when changing lanes to ensure safer maneuvering.
By enforcing these regulations and promoting responsible driving habits, the Abu Dhabi Police aim to create a safer road environment on Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Road, reducing the risk of accidents and ensuring the safety of all road users.
