UAE Condemns Attack on Ambassador’s Residence in Sudan Amid Ongoing Conflict

Dubai: The United Arab Emirates reacted angrily on Monday after the home of the UAE ambassador in war-torn Sudan was attacked and severely damaged.

The oil-rich Gulf kingdom has consistently denied having anything to do with the conflict, blaming the “brutal” attack on the military of Sudan.

The military of Sudan refuted the incident, maintaining that it did not aim targeting diplomatic missions.

The military accuses the UAE of supporting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which has been fighting since April 2023 in a war that has killed tens of thousands of people and triggered a severe humanitarian crisis.

“The UAE strongly condemns the heinous attack by Sudanese military aircraft on the residence of the UAE president in Khartoum, which resulted in heavy damage to the building,” the official WAM news agency reported.

“The UAE calls on the military to take full responsibility for this cowardly act,” describing it as a “flagrant violation of the basic principle of inviolability of diplomatic premises.”

The Sudanese military responded by “condemning and denying the accusation” by the UAE, saying it “does not target embassies, the headquarters of the United Nations or voluntary organizations, turn them into military bases and loot their properties”.

“Carrying out these heinous and cowardly acts are terrorist, insurgent fighters (RSF) … supported to do all this by countries known to the world,” a statement said.

According to eyewitnesses in Khartoum, heavy clashes have erupted in several parts of the capital over the past four days.

In June, Sudan’s ambassador to the United Nations, al-Harith Idris al-Harith Mohamed, accused Abu Dhabi of providing financial and military support to the RSF, saying it was “the main reason behind this protracted war”.

The UAE has dismissed allegations of support for the RSF as “misinformation”, saying its efforts are focused solely on alleviating Sudan’s humanitarian suffering.
