Trump Imposes Tariffs on UAE, KSA, Egypt, and Morocco Goods, Effective April 9

Trump Announces Universal 10% Import Tariff, Additional Levies on Select Countries

The United States will implement a universal 10% tariff on all imports starting April 5, followed by additional targeted tariffs on specific countries beginning April 9, as announced by President Donald Trump during a press conference at the White House Rose Garden.

The new tariff policy is designed to counteract what the US government perceives as unfair trade practices by other nations, including tariffs and non-monetary barriers that allegedly disadvantage American products in global markets. The universal 10% tariff will apply to all imported goods, irrespective of their country of origin, while some nations will face extra retaliatory levies.

Under the revised trade policy, the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) nations will be significantly affected. The UAE, Saudi Arabia, Egypt, and Morocco will be subject to an additional 10% tariff, while Tunisia will see tariffs as high as 28%, and Jordan will face a 20% levy on its exports to the US.

Exemptions will be made for energy resources, certain minerals that are not available domestically, and items such as steel, aluminum, and autos that are currently subject to Trump-era tariffs. The administration has emphasized that these policies are designed to protect American companies, reduce the trade deficit, and boost domestic production.

When the tariffs go into effect, global trading partners are expected to react, leading to increased trade tensions and economic shifts in the affected industries.
