Tajikistan, in their Asian Cup debut, secured a spot in the quarter-finals with a thrilling 5-3 penalty shootout victory over the United Arab Emirates (UAE) following a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Alisher Shukurov sealed the win with the final penalty in Doha, propelling the Central Asians – ranked 106th globally – into a clash with either Jordan or 2007 champions Iraq.
Tajikistan’s goalkeeper Rustam Yatimov played a crucial role, saving from Caio Canedo during the UAE’s second penalty in the shootout.
Vakhdat Khanonov’s 30th-minute header initially put Tajikistan on course for a historic win, but Khalifa Al-Hammadi’s 95th-minute equalizer forced the game into extra time. Despite reaching the semi-finals in the last two Asian Cups, the UAE, managed by Paulo Bento, bowed out to Tajikistan, a team ranked more than 40 places below them.
Under the leadership of charismatic Croatian coach Petar Segrt, Tajikistan advanced as Group A runners-up by drawing with China and defeating Lebanon in the first round. The quarter-final opponent for Tajikistan will be determined after the Iraq vs. Jordan match in the last 16 on Monday.
The UAE had an early setback as midfielder Abdalla Ramadan suffered a knee injury in the 16th minute, forcing a substitution. Tajikistan threatened to take the lead when Shervoni Mabatshoev’s attempt rolled wide of the post after poking the ball past the onrushing UAE goalkeeper Khalid Eisa.
Khanonov’s header, which Eisa fumbled over the line, eventually broke the deadlock in the 40th minute. Although the UAE dominated early in the second half, Tajikistan’s Ehson Panjshanbe tested Eisa with a notable chance.
In the 71st minute, Alisher Dzhalilov missed a golden opportunity, blazing wide despite an impressive run into the box. The UAE hit the post in injury time, but Hammadi’s dramatic equalizer from Ali Saleh’s free kick sent the game into extra time.
Australia had earlier secured the first spot in the quarter-finals by defeating Indonesia 4-0 on the same day.
