RTA to avoid waterlogging and traffic jam; Joint flood management room started

RTA Joint Flood Management Room

The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai has inaugurated the Joint Flood Management Room, signaling a significant step forward in the city’s preparedness for heavy rains and floods. This operational center, housed in the Enterprise Command and Control Center, is a collaborative effort with key partners, including Dubai Police General Headquarters, Dubai Municipality, and Mohammed Bin Rashid Housing Establishment.

The primary objective of the Joint Flood Management Room is to address water accumulation issues during heavy rains, closely monitor transport systems, and efficiently manage traffic disruptions. Equipped with cutting-edge technologies, the center aims to ensure the safety of road users and elevate Dubai’s standing as one of the world’s premier cities.

The comprehensive preparations undertaken by the Joint Flood Management Room encompass the coordination of various technical systems covering more than 8,000 kilometers of roads. At its core, the center features a central control room equipped with a sizable 53-square-meter screen, seamlessly connected to 34 technical devices.

Prior to the onset of the monsoon season, the management room will implement all necessary measures to mitigate potential traffic disruptions caused by heavy rains. Collaborating with partners and leveraging the latest technologies, the RTA aims to proactively manage and resolve any issues related to water accumulation, thereby enhancing the overall resilience of the city’s transportation infrastructure.

The center’s operational capabilities include real-time monitoring of weather forecasts and rainfall data in Dubai, facilitated through coordination with the National Center of Meteorology. This collaborative effort ensures that the Joint Flood Management Room remains well-informed and equipped to respond effectively to changing weather conditions.

To identify potential water-logged areas, the RTA has implemented advanced technologies such as a heat map (GIS map) and a video wall displaying live footage from 450 surveillance cameras. This information is critical for both supervisory and field teams, enabling them to take immediate actions and prevent disruptions due to waterlogging.

Additionally, the initiative includes a mobile command vehicle equipped with surveillance cameras directly connected to the control room. This mobile unit enhances monitoring capabilities in areas lacking fixed surveillance infrastructure, ensuring comprehensive coverage across the emirate.

The Joint Flood Management Room underscores the commitment of the RTA and its partners to address climate change challenges and fortify Dubai’s resilience against adverse weather conditions. This proactive approach aligns with the city’s vision and leadership’s directives, demonstrating a dedication to maintaining the highest standards of safety and efficiency on its roads.
