Artisans from the Makrana region in Rajasthan have dedicated more than four years to intricately chiselling marble blocks into pillars, columns, and idols for Abu Dhabi’s inaugural Hindu temple, set to be unveiled on February 14. Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic, these artisans have demonstrated their craftsmanship, showcasing pride and dedication in this grand project.
Ram Kishan Singh, a third-generation sculptor, expressed his excitement about contributing to the temple, emphasizing its significance in promoting brotherhood and communal harmony. Singh, along with fellow artisans, has painstakingly crafted 83 pieces for the temple, each serving as a testament to their skill and devotion.
Situated in Abu Mureikhah, near Al Rahba, the temple is being constructed by the BAPS Swaminarayan Sanstha on a sprawling 27-acre site. Skilled artisans from Rajasthan and Gujarat have lent their expertise to the project, creating exquisite marble carvings against a backdrop of sandstone. The choice of materials, including pink sandstone known for its durability in high temperatures, reflects considerations for the UAE’s climate.
Som Singh, an artisan who relocated to the UAE for the temple’s construction, highlighted the architectural elements and narratives depicted within the structure. Intricate carvings narrate stories from sacred scriptures, while architectural features symbolize harmony and endurance, mirroring the UAE’s landscape and ethos.
The temple’s construction harmoniously blends tradition and innovation, incorporating modern materials like heat-resistant nano tiles and heavy glass panels alongside traditional stone structures. Vishal Brahmabhatt, overseeing procurement and logistics, praised the collaborative efforts that overcame global challenges for the temple’s construction.
The dedication ceremony, to be attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, marks a significant milestone in the temple’s journey. Through meticulous attention to detail and unwavering dedication, these artisans have created a timeless symbol of spirituality and craftsmanship destined to be admired for generations.
