Language Integrity: Sheikh Dr. Sultan Al Qasimi’s Bid to Protect Arabic

Sheikh Dr. Sultan bin Muhammad Al Qasimi, the Ruler of Sharjah, has expressed his concern over the growing trend of incorporating foreign terms into the Arabic language and officially registering them. He believes that this practice has become increasingly prevalent and is not conducive to the preservation and development of the Arabic language.

To address this issue, Sheikh Dr. Sultan has announced his intention to personally attend a session of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo on October 2. During this session, he plans to thoroughly review all foreign terms that have been recorded over the past four years. This move reflects his commitment to upholding the integrity and purity of the Arabic language.

In his statement, Sheikh Dr. Sultan emphasized that the use of foreign words has escalated beyond acceptable levels. He noted that about four years ago, some individuals began incorporating specific phrases into the language, mistakenly assuming that they were already part of Arabic vocabulary. One such example he cited is the term “trend,” which has been introduced but has not undergone standardization. This has led to a situation where many people are adopting incorrect Arabic expressions.

Sheikh Dr. Sultan urged the members of the Arabic Language Academy in Cairo to conduct a comprehensive review of the registered foreign terms. He pointed out that the existing infractions make it imperative to halt the introduction of further foreign terminology into the Arabic language.

This initiative by Sheikh Dr. Sultan demonstrates his dedication to safeguarding the richness and authenticity of the Arabic language, ensuring that it continues to thrive and evolve while remaining rooted in its linguistic heritage.
