The Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi invited Badruddin Haqqani, a prominent Taliban figure who works for the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan; attend the Republic Day celebrations in Abu Dhabi.
Sources confirmed to India today that the invitation was sent to Haqqani as per normal diplomatic procedures.
“The invitation was sent to the duly accredited Afghan CdA. duly accredited by the Government of the United Arab Emirates; sources in Kabul said. The United Arab Emirates does not recognize the Taliban.
The invitation was addressed to the Prosecutor’s Office of the Embassy of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan; which reflects the continued use of this name despite the fact that the Taliban; Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan; Therefore, the Afghan embassy in Abu Dhabi will continue to fly the republic’s flag instead of the Taliban flag.
The source added, “The invitation has been extended to the CdA of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan Embassy. The flag of the Republic continues to fly over the Afghan Embassy in Abu Dhabi. It is customary for the Indian Embassy to invite all esteemed Ambassadors. /CdAs to the Republic Day reception.”
Badruddin appointed a Charge d’Affaires; Accredited by the UAE government, Haqqani is one of the sons of Jalaluddin Haqqani and the brother of Interior Minister Afrajghani.
The decision to invite Haqqani is in line with India’s commitment to diplomatic standards and practice of dealing with representatives of accredited missions. This approach is maintained by adhering to India’s position of non-recognition of the Taliban government and adherence to international diplomatic protocols.
India has worked with Taliban officials on various missions, including reopening the embassy in Kabul with a team of technical experts. However, the country has not received official recognition, reflecting a broader international approach to the Taliban-led Afghan government.
